In order to remove the watermarking, a would-be pirate would have to crack the normal encryption of the pdf file and then manually eradicate the watermark text from each and every page of the book. Like any other security measure, it is not insurmountable, but it is a road block. The alternative is the pirate places the watermarked file on a file-sharing network, but then it's clear what individual is ultimately responsible for the pirated version.
We view the watermarking security option as an alternative for publishers who desire even more freedom of use of their e-Books for the consumer, while still preserving some measure of anti-piracy protection for any file sold over DriveThruRPG.com.
If you have previously purchased titles from a publisher in DRM format and those titles are converted to the watermarked format, your downloads will automatically be reactivated (under your account info) to allow you to download those books in the new format! Simply login and click on "My Account" above. See the FAQ for more detailed instructions.
